Visiting the Great Ocean Road

So last year I told you about my first visit to the Great Ocean Road back in 1993.

Despite visiting Australia on two further occasions on Travel Agent Fam Trips in 94 and then again in 2002 I didn’t actually make it back to Melbourne to see the family until 2010.

Although one of my cousins moved to the UK for a while and bizarrely, he happened to be in Sydney too when I was there in 2002, so I saw him then too.

Making the Great Ocean Road Almost Top of the List

My 2010 trip to Melbourne was so I could have Christmas with my cousin and his new baby. But aside from wanting to see the baby, a trip to The Great Ocean Road was top of my sightseeing to-do list on this visit.

My flight package included three nights’ accommodation, so rather than travelling in and out from the suburbs, I left the family and stayed in Melbourne city centre as a base for my exploration days.

The Twelve Apostles

Early that first morning I was picked up by AAT Kings for my trip to the Great Ocean Road and I was so excited to finally see the iconic Twelve Apostles

The beauty of organised sightseeing tours is having an experienced guide to show you the sights, like where in the route is the best place to view koalas in the eucalyptus trees that line The Great Ocean Road.

And like my visit in 1993 the first place we stopped was the iconic Bells Beach from Point Break for a photo stop. With morning coffee taken in Anglesea with Billy Tea and Lamingtons. Good old Bush Tucker – but not the kind you see on I’m a Celebrity!!!

That first view of, what is left of, The Twelve Apostles was breath taking and something I’ll always remember.

Great Ocean Road Highlights

As well as The Twelve Apostles themselves highlights of that Great Ocean Road trip included, looking out from Gibson Steps, the lively seaside villages of Port Campbell and Lorne. The beautiful sites of Loch Ard Gorge and London Bridge, a natural arch of limestone once attached to the mainland.

We returned to the City, through the lush Rainforest of The Great Otway National Park.

Planning for the Next Visit

So, I mentioned in last years post that I was planning a visit for December 2021. Well that didn’t happen!

But I am excited to say I have the replanned trip for December 2022 and I cannot wait!

Although I am not going to make it to the Twelve Apostles this visit. I thought about it. I’d love to see them at Sunset and Sunrise.

But I will get back to The Great Ocean Road, as we have a special trip back to Angelsea and Torquay planned in celebration of my Nan.

Where Will You Go?

As a Tourism Australia Aussie Specialist, I cannot wait for the Borders to officially open and for people to start booking more dream trips to Australia. At the moment people are a bit cautious. I think borders will open again around Easter… watch this space!

But whether like me you head to Victoria, Melbourne and The Great Ocean Road. Or you head out to Western Australia, with its direct flight from London in under 19 hours. Beautiful Beaches, Perfect Parkland, Wonderful Wine Regions and Quirky Quokkas found on Rottnest Island.

But the destination that has made it high on my list more recently is Darwin. Again, offering a direct service from London or via Singapore. With its proximity to Asia, it has fantastic food offerings. Street Markets with Sunset Views. And the option to join The Ghan Train through the Red Centre to Adelaide. Where you could of course head to Kangaroo Island or maybe drive to The Great Ocean Road to the Twelve Apostles.
