Hello!

Childhood Holiday Memories

With the school summer holidays upon us. It got me thinking. Back to my own Childhood Holidays. And the memories.

Don’t know about you, but the majority of my Childhood Holidays were “Staycations”.

The Staycation

It goes without saying that I love to Travel. But we live in a beautiful country. With so much to see and do. And I have had some glorious Staycations over the years. And some. Well. Best left in the memories!!

Learning to Ride

Probably the most significant of my Childhood Holidays were those to stay with family friends in the rolling hills of Herefordshire. Its where I first sat on a Pony. And where I learned to ride. With my Dad working shifts, we often headed up for weekends when he was working. And for longer stays when he wasn’t. School Holidays and even Christmas one year. The year I sprained my ankle!

Learning to Drive

But most of my Summer Beach Holidays were spent in and around Southport. Ainsdale with is grassy dunes. And Formby with its Squirrel Reserve. Not sure how many red squirrels they still get. But it is still well known for them.

Back then you could drive down onto the Beach. I recall sitting on my Dads knee steering as he drove down the sand!

I also remember getting lost more than once in the Sand Dunes. And my cousin having to come and find me. I couldn’t have been much more than 4.

Holiday Parks

I danced as a child. Old Time Ballroom. Passed on from older cousins who did it before me. And some of our competitions were held in well known Holiday Parks. I didn’t make it big from Dancing but I did get caught playing Space Invaders between dances in full dress. And got caught by a photographer. Which made the local press. “Julie’s Dance in Space”!!

Driving down to Somerset one trip. We were in convoy with my partners family. My partner, bored of the time it was taking. Spent most of the trip lying across the parcel shelf of their car. Clearly most of my memories were from well before Child Safety Laws!!!

But probably the most special of these Holiday Park Holidays. Especially now. Was to Clacton in 1981. My parents had treated themselves to a fortnight in Corfu. But I stayed at home with my Nan. And she took us for a week at a Clacton Holiday Park. She didn’t drive so we had to travel by train. The days were spent playing in the pool. Whilst my Nan watched with a cup of Tea. And the evenings spent playing Bingo. In exchange for tokens to win a prize. I came back with a lot of toys I really didn’t need!!

School Trips

In our final year of Primary School, we were treated to a residential trip. It appears you could choose Swanage or France. For reasons I don’t recall I chose Swanage. Maybe to be with my buddies. Who knows? But I am still friends with those girls today, so its definitely possible. We have often reminisced about this trip when we have got together over the past “cough” 37 years. It’s such a beautiful area. And I’ve been lucky to revisit the area a few times in the past 20 odd years as my Dad lives so close.

We went to places like Lulworth Cove and Corfe Castle. Even Bovington Tank Museum apparently. I have no recollection of this but the memories from the girls prove we went!!

In Secondary School at the start of our GCSE years we were taken on a short residential to the local Scout Camp. A mere 30 minutes from home. But thankfully in dormitories rather than tents. We took part in lots of activities. Including a day on a Barge, managing the locks. Which was so much fun.

At College studying Leisure Management, we should have had an overseas trip. Earmarked to be Amsterdam. But due to the first Gulf War (the first one!!) we were unable to get permission to go.

But that didn’t stop some of us! Four of us instead headed off for 2 weeks in Magaluf in between years 1 and 2. Sun and Sangria. And a fantastic fortnight. Whilst I don’t see my college friends anymore. We did make friends with a young couple and their toddler on that trip. And I am still friends with them today and that toddler, now has one of her own!

Such great memories. So much so I actually went back to Magaluf for my 40th birthday back in 2014!
